Given the super fast pace the guitar gear world moves at, I rarely bother, or rather, rarely have the time to post about the old stuff, i.e. anything older than a year. But my personal experience of having recently listened to the sound being churned out from this super-ancient Peavey Mark IV bass head has tempered my view against oldies. As such, here’s a review of the Peavey for your reading pleasure.

For those of you who can’t be bothered to read the whole review, let me jump straight to the conclusion for you. The bass head scored a 5 out of 5 overall rating, with clearly effusive praise from the reviewer (if the rating didn’t say it all for you), “I was originally going to purchase an Ashdown ABM series. (i was willing to spend REAL cash) and a friend reccommended i go down to the store and try this out. It had BETTER tone, More Power and it felt way more solid. The best part is i saved like $1500. I’ll recommend this head to anyone looking for something serious.”

IK Multimedia recently launched a full demo of its sequel to the award-winning amp modeling and effects software, AmpliTube.

Although the demo only works for owners of the iKey or any other Syncrosoft USB dongle, it will function with all the same features as the full non-demo version of the software. Of course, there is a restriction of 30 starts and 10 days, but that’s more than enough time to sample the 80 modeled amps, cabinets, stops and rack effects covered by AmpliTube 2.

Three new guitar effects pedals have been released by Marshall Amplification into our hands – the Regenerator (RG-1), Reflector (RF-1) and Echohead (EH-1). All three pedals are contained in all-metal casings, and are powered by a 9 Volt battery or optional 9 Volt adapter. Other common features include passive bypass and a multi-mode selector switch.

According to Marshall Amps, the Regenerator is “… a chorus, a flanger, and a phaser pedal all in one sturdy shell…” while the Reflector “…add defuse trails to your playing without ever swallowing your tone.” Let’s not forget the Echohead, which allows you to “…create pulsing tones with your guitar and add dense rhythmic textures to your sound.” Of course, these descriptions are according to Marshall Amps.

It was recently reported that the VOX Brian May AC30 Combo – an updated and reinvented version of Brian May’s legendary amplifier and boost pedal setup – was launched during NAMM 2006, and will be available starting March 2006. It’s a limited edition piece too, with only 500 of them to be produced and sold worldwide.

The 30 Watt Vox AC30BM features a built-in foot-switchable boost circuit, a back panel 15 Watt switch, a built-in treble/mid single transistor boost circuit, and two Celestion/VOX Alnico Blue 12″ 15 Watt loudspeakers. Of course, Brian May’s signature logo is clearly imprinted on the control panel – which is something that definitely contributes towards the suggested retail price of US$3000.
